Shipwreck museum at Kyrenia fort

If you are here at Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus for your North Cyprus holidays then visit shipwreck museum too which is at Kyrenia castle. There is an excellent display of the ancient ship. There are various things to look at too (brought up from the bottom of the sea). It was rumoured that the valuable finds were longer at the shipwreck museum and that many of them were destroyed or scattered but there is nothing like that. Today, visitors can see everything which was there at the museum. Visitors can find all amphorae and many other objects from the wreck, displayed in a modern style.

Kyrenia Castle and Yacht Harbour

Wooden ship is still well preserved even though it was there at the bottom of the sea for years and years. The ship was discovered at a depth of about 80 ft. There were no iron nails in the timber (Copper nails were used).  The timber (known to be Aleppo pine) was sheathed with lead.  Interesting finds include jars of almonds and many other objects, small or big.

It is reported that some of the timber which was brought up by the drivers was as soft as sponge and which would have disintegrated into power if it had been left to dry within a couple of months. Therefore, a great amount of care was taken by the archaeologists. The ship’s wooden hull was kept in a huge tank with fresh water. The water was constantly changed so as to remove all the sea water from the wooden cells. Then finally it was left to dry. It was injected with a special plastic type of resin (this work took two years almost). It is really hard to say how long the ship will last like this but the government takes here every time to preserve the history of the island.

It is really a valuable asset to the tourism sector in Northern Cyprus. So, if you are never here then we suggest that you come here.
